If you’ve ever wished you could use your sewing machine as a drawing tool, well, you can!
Free motion embroidery can be daunting at first, particularly if you’ve only ever used your machine with the presser foot on. I’ll show you how to check for the technical things that can go wrong and teach you the skills that you can then use for life ! I teach beginners regularly, and also a free motion embroidery ‘plant stitching’ workshop for Islington haberdashery Ray Stitch. One of the things I hear most from students after a class is ‘I can’t believe I can actually do it!’. When you book a lesson with me, I’ll be there to show you how to set your machine up and get started, as well as help you tweak things along the way as you gain confidence.
I’ll teach you online via ZOOM, or in person if you live in London and feel you would benefit from that.
One-to-one lessons are ideal for you if:
you’re a complete beginner to free motion embroidery
you’re a bit stuck with how to work out the kinks in your machine
you want to work on a specific project. I’m also happy to give you a project to work on!
You have 3 options to choose from:
- One-to-One Lesson (1 hour) – This would suit you if you’re a complete beginner wanting to learn how to set up the machine correctly for free motion embroidery and a little try out. If you’ve tried it before but just want a refresher or some guidance while working through something tricky with the machine, this option is also for you.
- Five One-to-One Lessons – This is a great option for you if you’re a complete beginner, and maybe a little bit nervous about trying free motion embroidery. You might want a little bit of extra time to build up your confidence with it. I would be on hand to help you through any initial bumps that are so common with using the machine in this way. It would also be a good choice if you want to work on a specific project with me. You can take these lessons as five separate hours, or choose to have slightly longer lessons.
- Plant Stitching Workshop (3 hours) – I have tried and tested this masterclass with many beginner students, and think it is perhaps the best way in to free motion embroidery! Together, we will work with plants that you have in your house (or images of plants), sketching them first to get used to the ‘free’, quick motion, then transferring this feeling to the machine. We start with writing and scribbling on the sewing machine, and gradually build up to plant-like shapes, with some fabric applique plant pots! This is a one-to-one workshop.
I’ll send you an email shortly after booking to arrange your lesson time, and to send you suggestions of equipment/materials that might be helpful. Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions at all!
